Autun visited on 27th Oct 2021 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 5 Access: 3 The Lousberg Flint Quarry is on top of a very steep hill in the centre of the city of Aachen. There is a car park quite near the top. Much of the summit of this feature was apparently used for making flint tools, and there are some excellent information boards (in German) on the summit now, descirbing both the geology and use in both the local and regional setting. The position on the map is incorrect for the main mining waste piles, which are intermixed with the trees 100 m north west of the Lousberg summit, rather than 200 m south east of the summit, as indicated on the map. The information boards are likewise some 200 m north west of the indicated position. Within the exposed roots of the trees many apparently worked fragments of flint are exposed amongst the leaves and detritus, and after 10 or 15 minutes walking about it is difficult to not spot at least a few which look like failed attempts to make axes! In any case, the site is beautiful and worth a stroll if visiting this city.

The Lousberg is a mountain in Aachen (North Rhine-Westphalia). It was used as a Neolithic flint quarry from ca. 3500 - 3000 BC.

Material for at least 300,000 flint axe blades was quarried here. Lousberg flint tools have been found in a radius of 250 km away from the site. The flint-containing limestone top plateau of the mountain was originally 6 m higher than today. The corresponding Neolithc spoil tips are still preserved today up to a hight of 4.5 m.

Finds from the quarry are displayed in the LVR-Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn

Lousberg Flint Quarry submitted by Autun : Many, many chipped rock fragments cover the waste piles and top of the Lousberg. Some, such as this, look to have been failed attempts at making into something... (Vote or comment on this photo)
