Ancient Settlement in Russia

The name Sintashta comes from the name of the river that cuts through the site.

This fortified settlement in the southern Urals is dated to about 2000–1600 BCE. It was excavated between 1968 and 1986 and gave its name to the Sintashta-Petrovka culture. The site is located near Chelyabinsk Oblast in Russia.

The settlement closely resembles the nearby site of Arkaim in shape and size, although it iss not as well preserved. This involves a round earthen fortification wall suported by timber frames and strengthened by mud bricks and surrounded by a moat. There were towers at the 4 main gates. The houses were in concentric ciscles around the central square. Metallurgical furnaces were also found. The site is also remarkable in that horse burials and the earliest known chariot were found here.
