Modern monument, built with stones from a now disappeared Stones Circle at Diepenbeek.
Two Stone Circles were unearthed in Diepenbeek (near Hasselt) at the end of the 19th century. Some stones have been taken to the lawn in front of the Atheneum of Hasselt, where they still stand today after having been displaced a few times in the course of the 20th century (see http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=37023).
Some others, among them the large slab visible on the photo, served in 1928 to build the basis for a statue meant to represent He(y)nric van Veldeke(n), today's spelling Hendrik van Veldeke (ca. 1150, post 1184), the first known poet from the middle-ages to have written in Dutch instead of Latin. He is therefore called Vader der Nederlandse dichters (Father of the Dutch-speaking poets) on the basis of this monument at Hasselt and known as such everywhere else.
Judging by its size, the big slab was, just possibly, the stone erected in the middle of the Stones Circle.
