Roche Trouée
Roche Trouée submitted by Alta-Falisa : Some 50 m after the information boards, you'll face this rock. This is not the hole you are looking for, just a landmark. Another 100 m to go, North-West, hidden by trees. April 2017. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A large gaping hole in the rock has been named Roche Trouée ('Holed Rock').

Water has formed several caves and caverns in the limestone underground, used as shelter at various ages.

Some of them have delivered many objects, the oldest dated to the Upper Palaeolithic (20,000 to 40,000 years ago). A part of which is preserved and exhibited at the Musée du Malgré Tout, Treignes.

Further South, a Neolithic grave was discovered.

Further West, but not related to the cave, a Roman villa (260 to 400 AD) has been excavated and is open to visit.

Today, the caves offer a hibernation site for bats.

Non vidi. I'll visit next time I'm in the region.

Roche Trouée submitted by Alta-Falisa : The information board gives little about the "Roche Trouée", but much more about the natural features to be discovered along the track (see Tourism Office of Treignes for more details). April 2017. (Vote or comment on this photo)
