Rotta, a village predating the city of Rotterdam
The river Rotte dates back at al least 2500 years ago. From the early beginning people lived on its shores, as archaeological research confirms. They dwelled at the shores of the Rotte and the settled on higher grounds - terps - in the area of the Maas and the Rotte. The area is part of a vast Delta of the rivers Rhine, Maas and Scheldt.
One such terp was discovered during the excavations in the construction of the Markthal, on it the remains of six successive farmhouses were preserved (900AD). These farmers lived in a settlement called Rotta. They were traders along the rivers in the delta. In 1028AD the name Rotta was mentioned for the first time. In 1270 a dam was build to protect the farmers from floods.
The exhibition can be seen in the stairway of the parking garage in the Markthal. Each of the 3 floors shows another period of time. An accessible way to make people aware of their roots and history. You get a quick view from the escalators (roltrappen) and from the parking garage you can see the artefacts in display cases and some animations.
