Alta-Falisa visited on 12th Apr 2014 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 5 Easy access on an (a bit bumpy) earth road, an ancestral road linking two old towns mind you ! Already visible from the N.99 Chimay-Couvin road (at km 30,7), about 150 m towards the South.

A standing stone mentioned repeatedly in local archives since the early 16th century, albeit under different names.

The Atlas de Ferraris, elaborated between 1770 and 1778, figures it along the ancestral road linking Chimay and Couvin, two old towns about 14 km apart (Chimay is attested in writing at the beginning of the 11th century, and Couvin at the end of the 9th century). This road still exists, as an earth road.

When investigated and fully described for the first time in 1889, the stone was lying on the ground. The State acquired it in 1897. In 1908, it was re-erected.
The Pierre qui Tourne still stands as shown on the Atlas de Ferraris : on the limit of two provinces, Hainaut and Namur – to be precise : still in Hainaut, but just !

The menhir is at walking distance, but the field is a private property dedicated to agriculture. Therefore, drive 1 km westwards (towards Chimay), turn left towards Boutonville, then left again on the ancestral (but perfectly suitable for modern car provided you drive slowly) earth road for about 1000 m.

The limit between the Provinces of Namur and Hainaut is the thick dotted line. Note that the stone, then shown in the Province of Namur (to the east of the "border"), now stands on the other side, i.e. in the Province of Hainaut (but by just a few meters).

The ancestral road linking Chimay (out of frame, westwards) to Couvin (idem, eastwards) went over Baileux, Boutonville and Gonrieux. These villages still exist, as well as long stretches of this road, the same good old earth road as depicted on the map. The map also shows the menhir under the name of "Churie Pierre", at the limit of the two same Provinces as n...

Archives do not tell whether it has been moved or not, which leads to assume that any displacement must have been minor, for example to place on the limit of two provinces : Hainaut and Namur, where it stands today – to be precise : still in Hainaut, but just !
