Palmyra Temple of Baal
Palmyra Temple of Baal submitted by AlexHunger : Helenistic Temple of the semitic God Baal in Palmyra. Unfortunately it lost most of the columns except on the East side, seen here. There is a good part of the compound wall colonade. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Temple in Syria

A very large Hellenistic temple dedicated to the Semitic god, Baal, responsible for storms and weather.

The Cella is largely intact but only a couple of the columns on the east side remain intact. There is an open air altar roughly in the middle of the compound.
The surrounding colonnade is also only partially intact, while the compound wall has been patched over the centuries. The front gate on the west is however blocked up. There are many remaining blocks lying around for future restoration efforts.
A UNESCO World Heritage site.

Islamic State destroys another Palmyra temple by davidmorgan on Tuesday, 01 September 2015
(User Info | Send a Message)
Satellite images have confirmed that Islamic State (Isis) has largely destroyed another ancient temple in the Syrian city of Palmyra, the United Nations said on Monday.

A powerful blast in the ruins of the ancient city on Sunday was believed to have been the result of Isis targeting the Temple of Bel, although the extent of the damage at the Roman-era structure was not immediately clear.
