Artificial Mound in Adiyaman Province, Turkey.

Funerary sanctuary and burial mound built by King Antiochus I in 62 BCE.
Syncretic Greek and Persian gods.

Text by Kustur:
I visited Mount Nemrut in June 2022. The tomb of Antiochus, situated east of the Taurus mountains in Eastern Turkey, was created in the first century BC. Antiochus ruled the kingdom of Commagene and around 62 BC he built a 55 metre high tumulus, as his tomb, using 50,000 tons of stones on the mountain top. On the eastern & western flanks of this tomb he created identical temple platforms flanked by a number of huge statues, each around 9-metres high, of two lions, two eagles, and various Gods which included himself. The heads of the statues now lie on the ground as the result of earth tremors common in the region. It’s a spectacular site, especially at sunrise & sunset, perched nearly 2,200 meters above sea level.

Nemrut Dag
Nemrut Dag submitted by PAB : The head of Zeus, accompanied by an eagle and lion. The statue of Zeus on the East Terrace is the largest of the statues of the gods, and was made from 31 separate pieces of stone. The head had already fallen from its body when the site was discovered - only the statue of Kommangene had her head in place when Nemrut was discovered in 1882 (but even that fell in the early 1960s as a result ...
