Ancient Temple in Syria

Ancient Canaanite tempel of Baal, first rebuilt as a Tempel of Jupiter/Sol and then converted to (Greek catholic) church in 326 CE by the order of St. Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great. There are three niches in the outside back wall for Statues of Baal.

The tempel saw extensive damage during a 3rd Century CE earthquake, which led to some haphazzard reconstruction, not to mention the loss of the columns. Only 3 column bases are now visible. However, an inscription with the name of Gaius Galigula Ceasar is visible on the outside wall.

NE-SW orientation.
