Ancient Village or Settlement in Turkey

Cappodacian Underground city dating to about 1000-800 BCE when Assyrian where troubling the remnants of the Hittites.

Later the underground cities where reused by christians fleeing Roman persecutions. They could hold up to 10,000 people, with animals on the top floor. An other one in Oshonak held up to 50,000 people.

The shafts go about 45 Meters deep in about 8 levels. There were air shafts disguised as Wells on the surface. Ground water was at about 50-55 meters
There was also a narrow 8 Km long passage way to the next underground city. Rolling stone doors blocked off passages in case of trouble.

In the last 1800 years locals farmers used them for holding sheep and storing grain and wıne. The Government and archeologists only learned of them again in 1961s and have made an effort to show some of them and prevent damage.
