Salamis
Salamis submitted by raythemapman : General view of the site. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Salamis is an ancient city located 6Km north of Famagusta in northern Cyprus. It became the capital of Cyprus about 1100 BC. It has been occupied by the Assyrians, Greeks, Egyptians, Persians and Romans.

After an earthquake destroyed the city in76 AD it was rebuilt by Trajan and Hadrian, the Gymnasium is a fine example of the Roman reconstruction of the City. Another fine structure is the theater with its 50 rows of seats that could hold 15,000 people. A lot of the City still has to be excavated, part of it is on the sea bed and can be seen through the clear water of the Mediterranean Sea. The photos were taken in the 1970s when I was attached to the UN in Cyprus.

There has been new excavation of the harbour area and main street making this ancient site even larger than it was. There is so much more not discovered - its exciting.
