Ancient Village or Settlement in Cyprus
A few miles from Kissonerga, at a more inland site on a hill is the Chaciolithic village of Lempa. The site has a fence around it and signage, but is free to access. The Lempa settlement is dated to the late Chalcolithic period (3.500 - 2.400 BC) (while Κissonerga was occupied from the Aceramic Neolithic period to the early Bronze Age (6.200 - 2.300 BC)). The remains are clusters of mainly circular structures with a diameter of 3 - 16m. There are also reconstructed huts using the original materials, as at other more well known prehistoric sites in Cyprus.
The excavations at Lempa found the remains of seven structures, three of them preserved in good condition their stone foundations. In the two larger structures a central hearth was discovered made of stones covered with a lime plaster, while in the floor there were post holes which supported the roof. These three buildings are probably parts of the same domestic complex, presenting different rooms of the same house rather than three different houses.
Significantly several female figurines were discovered, most importantly, the Lady of Lempa (see photos below), an incrediblly well preserved limestone statue displayed in the Cyprus museum in Nicosia. She was found in a situation which suggested she was behind a partition screen in the building, interpreted as a ‘cult’ place. Mini versions or replicas of this female figure (e.g. for pendants) were found in other houses. This strongly suggests worship of a Goddess, or fertility cult.
