Temple in Nubia

All the Egyptian temples in Nubia were saved from flooding during the building of the Aswan High Dam by a concerted effort of Unesco and participating countries such as Italy, Spain, Yugoslavia, Germany, the US amnong others. Egypt desperately needed the power and a regulated water suplly for a growing population. Abu Simble represented the culmination of this effort as it was the largest and most representative of the temples in Nubia. Over a 5 year period, the entire mountain as well as the temple was literally cut up and transported 200 meters to the west and 60 meters up the cliff in thousands of blocks an rebuilt. The 4 exterior Colossi of Ramses II are 32 Meters tall. Note the supreme air of self satisfaction on Ramses' face. One of the Collossi collapsed already in antiquity, 27 BCE, during an earthquake and was not restored as the face was smashed during the fall. Originaly, the rising sun would light up Ramses' face at the back of the temple on the 21st of October, his birthday. Due to a small error during reconstruction, this now takes place on 22 October. There are superlative scenes of the battle of Kadesh against the Hittites in the interior. Although the battle was a draw, Ramses' spin doctors made it into a great political victory. The ensuing peace treaty is the first historically recorded peace treaty and actually held for quite some time. The interior 8 colossi of Ramses are 9 Meters tall.
