Ancient Settlement in Antalya Province, Turkey

Limyra, ancient Lycian city (Zemuri).

Structural remains on the site date back far as the early 4thCenturyBC. Ceramic materials have been found on the site that date back as far as the 8thCenturyBC, but the possible extent of any settlement of this early date has not yet been determined.

The main part of the city is located on the coastal plain roughly north of Finike, there is also a citadel on a hill over looking the town and an extensive necropolis. Some settlement has spread onto the site but generally it is a mix of orange groves, greenhouses and open fields (arable).

There are not many standing remains to see at this town, but these remains do include: the cenotaph of Gaius Caesar, a 2ndCenturyAD theatre, city walls, citadel, rock cut tombs, Paved streets (underwater) and a theatre.

Limyra
Limyra submitted by h_fenton : Looking north over a flooded building towards the nearby 2ndCenturyAD theatre. This part of the site and the whole of the main street were still being excavated when a stream managed to break though into the excavation flooding it, excavation on this part of the site was then abandoned.
