TheCaptain visited on 29th May 1998 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 4 It annoys me that I have no photos of this from my visit in 1998. I had another look through my old boxes of photos and there was nothing at all that day of my cycling holiday, although I could have sworn differently. Perhaps my camera was left in my tent as we visited it on a day ride out from Oudenaaard. Very unlikely, I could swear I had pictures of a local windmill and the bar where we had lunch, but nothing was found.

Peetje en Meetje
Peetje en Meetje submitted by Alta-Falisa : Peetje en Meetje, May 2014. (Vote or comment on this photo)
With uncertain origins, this rare Dolmen resides in the Kluisberg Forest Park, to the west of the town of Ronse, right on the border between Flanders and Wallonia.

Update by Alta-Falisa - AUG.2014. This dolmen is not a real dolmen, not even a reconstructed one, but a "synthetic" dolmen. As the numerous ancient postcards show, the two stones (called "Peetje" and "Meetje", two popular diminutives for Godfather end Godmother) were originally much further apart than today. I haven't found out so far when the monument was assembled. "Meetje" and "Peetje", unearthed and put closer to each other, were supplemented by a few other stones found or collected nearby (see site "Kluisberg", about 1 km away). The present dolmen cannot be older than ca. 1930, and could even be much more recent.

Peetje en Meetje
Peetje en Meetje submitted by Alta-Falisa : PLEASE NOTE : Two stones (see old postcard hereunder), unearthed, brought together and supplemented by a third upright and a capstone, were assembled to form a dolmen. Nice and pleasant indeed in a very popular recreation park, but without any historical meaning. May 2014. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Peetje en Meetje
Peetje en Meetje submitted by Alta-Falisa : This postcard, judging by the state of the forest, and the now bilingual legend, could tentatively be dated 1920-1925. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Peetje en Meetje
Peetje en Meetje submitted by Alta-Falisa : Vintage postcard, pre-WWI. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Peetje en Meetje
Peetje en Meetje submitted by Alta-Falisa : The postcard is not dated, but the new trees, the better quality of the photo and, above all, the now bilingual caption : "Mont de l'Enclus - Petje et Metje ", "Kluisberg - Peetje en Meetje" clearly show that we are now in the late years 1920's. Incidentally, that stump has now gone !

Peetje en Meetje
Peetje en Meetje submitted by Alta-Falisa : A postcard dated 1920. The stones emerged from WWI "without a scratch" (as well as this stump, apparently), but the wood is devastated -- although the front line was further to the West (Ieper, Poperinge). The caption reads : "Mont de l'Enclus . Orroir . Peetje et Meetje".

Peetje en Meetje
Peetje en Meetje submitted by Alta-Falisa : Yet another pre-WWI postcard. The multiplicity of these postcards attests the immense popularity of the two stones, which were used by Hoteliers in their advertisements. The caption reads : "Orroir (Mont de l'Enclus) - Peetje et Meetje". Written in French, it was meant to attract a French-speaking clientèle. Orroir is a village at the foot of Mont de l'Enclus (Kluisberg). One stone is clearly...

Peetje en Meetje
Peetje en Meetje submitted by Alta-Falisa : Detail of a postcard dated pre-1910. The stone in the foreground (bottom left) and the other one in the background (top right) -- in between stands a stump -- would be used after WWI to build a (false) dolmen. The caption reads : "Ruyen - Peetje & Meetje". Ruyen is another village lying around the hill called Kluisberg (in Dutch), Mont de l'Enclus (in French).

Peetje en Meetje
Peetje en Meetje submitted by Alta-Falisa : Undated postcard, most probably pre-WWI. The caption reads : "Peetje et Meetje. Amougies". Amougies is a village at the foot of "Kluisberg" (in Dutch), "Mont de l'Enclus" (in French). Between the two stones stands a stump, which is seen of many postcards.

Peetje en Meetje
Peetje en Meetje submitted by Alta-Falisa : "Modern" Capstone. Two stones (see old postcard), supplemented by a third upright and this capstone, were assembled to form a dolmen. Nice and pleasant indeed in a very popular recreation park, but without any historical meaning.

Peetje en Meetje
Peetje en Meetje submitted by Alta-Falisa : In the morning, the park is less crowded. May 2014.

Peetje en Meetje
Peetje en Meetje submitted by Alta-Falisa : "Here, for centuries, night and day have Peetje and Meetje stood guard", is it written on the bank behind the reconstructed dolmen.

Peetje en Meetje
Peetje en Meetje submitted by Alta-Falisa : Road description: your Sat Nav will lead you to the end of the road Poletsestraat, i.e. in front of a recreation centre. Judging by the number of postcards published from, say, 1901 to 1930, these two stones must have been immensely popular. Strangely enough, I cannot find any document showing the "dolmen" as it looks today, not even to put a date on this assemblage.
