Oinoanda
Oinoanda submitted by davidmorgan : The theatre at Oinoanda, set in the forested mountains of inland Lycia. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Settlement in Muğla Province, Turkey. Oinoanda was originally part of a tetrapolis lead by Kibyra (which also included Balbura and Bubon) before presumably becoming a member of the Lycian League.

It was home to Diogenes the Epicurean in the 2nd century CE and there are several inscriptions by him scattered around the site. It has never been excavated so all that's known about it is from historical records.

The site is a stiff 1.5km hike up rocky goat tracks rising 300 metres above the village of Incealiler (1200m altitude). It's very overgrown with trees, I appear to have missed parts of it at the southern end. But I had a great sense of achievement in actually finding the place.

Here is The Epicurean Inscription by Diogenes, and a site plan at the Historic Anatolia website.

Thanks, anon. Pretty much off the beaten track (due to access) but definitely a worthwhile site to visit. I intend to revisit it one day because I totally missed the aqueduct at the south end of the ridge (which is the best way to approach it, rather than straight up like I did).
I recently met a local who had taken some tourists up there in the winter, apparently they were astounded by an amazing site in the snow!

I think the best way is to head due west out of the village and aim for the aqueduct at 36.803717, 29.547340 before heading north. A man from the village offered to guide me but I decided to do it at my own pace, it took me about 3.5 hours in total.

Hi David, many thanks for getting back to me. Did it take 3.5 hours to get to the ruins or 3.5 hours to get there, explore and get back to the village? Sorry to sound a bit daft! Also did people in the village speak English as I have no Turkish.
          Thanks again Tom

Yes, 3.5 hours in total to get there, explore and get back to the village. Nobody spoke English when I visited. I parked at the village tea house and walked from there.

Brilliant thanks. I'm going in August so will be hot but I'm determined to get there. Many thanks for taking the time to answer. Best wishes, Tom

Oinoanda and the biggest inscription of the ancient world by davidmorgan on Saturday, 15 September 2012
(User Info | Send a Message)
A new project of the Istanbul Department investigating the city of Diogenes and his famous philosophical inscription.

In addition to the Epicurean inscription, numerous non-philosophical texts have been discovered at Oinoanda and published. Of particular note are the genealogical inscription from the mausoleum of Licinnia Flavilla and the so-called Demostheneia inscription. Along with Diogenes' inscription, these are among the most important inscriptions recovered from the ancient Greek world and underscore the exceptional significance of Oinoanda as an "epigraphic Eldorado".

From the German Archaeological Institute.
