Ancient Temple in Lower Egypt (North)
The 26th Dynasty temple was found buried in the sand in 1942 by the Egyptian archaeologist Ahmed Fakhry. Only the lower 2-3 metres of the temple remain, the top layer having been lost due to predation. Nevertheless some good carvings remain.
The temple was constructed around 550 BCE under the reign of Pharaoh Amasis. The largest part, the so-called Chapel No.1 is now covered by a new wooden roof and has a new front to protect it. The other buildings, believed to be priests' offices or other chapels are not open to the public at this time.
Our guide indicated the temple might have been dedicated to Amun, though 27 other deities are depicted here, including Aha and Nehemaoua, which are particular to desert oases.
Altitude 133 Meters.
