Kos Temple of Asklepios
Kos Temple of Asklepios submitted by Bjorn : The altar of Asclepius Site in Greek Islands (Aegean etc) Greece (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Temple in Greek Islands (Aegean etc)

Remains of a 2nd century BCE Doric temple with side buildings and a monumental entrance. The temple measured 33 metres by 19 metres and had 11 by 6 columns.

Asklepion is the major archaeological site on Kos island. According to the tradition it was founded by Hippocrates himself, but archaeological excavations proved that it was build later, after his death in 377 BC.

The main part of the complex is temple of Asclepius, much damaged by Knights of Malta who used is as source of stone. On the terrace of Asklepion the remains of a votive altar are preserved, while in it's top part we can see ruins of Doric temple dated to the 2nd century BC. There are also ruins of a Roman temple dedicated to Nero, built in Corinthian style.
