The centre of healing here was founded in about 129AD by a local citizen named Archias who had been treated at the Asclepion in Greece. The centre came to the fore due to the work of the physician Galen.
The old city of Pergamum was known largely because of it’s Temple of Asculapius. Asculapius is the Greek god of healing. The centre would have once been thronged with those seeking healing …. although pregnant women and the terminally ill were refused admittance. At the heart of the site is the Sacred Spring where those hoping for healing would drink as a first step toward a diagnosis of their ailment. Water from the spring is channelled to flow down the side of the stairs which lead to a tunnel to the Temple of Telesphorus. After drinking from the spring, the sick headed away to sleep in the Temple of Telesphorus …. hoping for a dream which would lead to their diagnosis and treatment.
Incidentally, Telesphorus had 2 daughters, Hygeia and Panacea …. both with strong medical connections.
The site also has a small theatre.
