Akrotiri

Akrotiri is a Minoan Bronze Age settlement on the volcanic Greek island of Thira (Santorini). The modern name and population are currently Greek. The civilization of the Bronze Age city, however, shows affinities to early Cretan civilization, which, going by its writing system (Linear A), was undoubtedly not Greek. The Greeks arrived in Crete during the Mycenaean Period, later than Akrotiri. The date of their diffusion through the Cyclades remains a mystery, but there is nothing identifiably Greek at Akrotiri.

The settlement was destroyed in the Theran eruption sometime in the 16th century BC [1] and buried in volcanic ash, which preserved the remains of fine frescoes and many objects and artworks. The settlement has been suggested as a possible inspiration for Plato's story of Atlantis. If true, then the Athenians must have inherited the story from non-Greek sources. Athens itself is too old to have been originally Greek, but the date of its Hellenization is uncertain. In any case the Atlantis speculation is only one of many. Akrotiri has been excavated since 1967. Source: Wikipedia

I visited this in '93 and the frescoes were in Athens but when I went to Athens in '04 they said they were back on the island. Is there a special museum now at Akrotiri with them in?
