The ancient city of Aptera was occupied already in the Minoan period. Subsequently it is mentioned in Linear B tablets from the 14th-13th century BC. Fortifications of ancient Aptera have the main entrance to the city in their western part. In the 1st half of the 4th century BC a road was built along the city walls. Many of the best preserved structures in Aptera date to the Roman period, including a three-vaulted cistern and a villa.
