Sculptured Stone in Latvia.
It may have been sculpted between the 16th and the 18th centuries, when many pagan idol sculptures have been created in Latvia, then hidden away.
Found mid-19th century under a thick layer of lichen and moss by a farmer from Salaspils (ca. 30 km SE of Riga). He brought to Riga in 1851 or 1852 for the use of a mason who soon realized he wasn't in front of an ordinary boulder. The mason handed it over to the cathedral, where a collection of antiques was being assembled.
Its trace is lost long before the end of the 19th century : the stone, a pagan idol, had possibly been already buried by the religious authorities. Only a few photos remained.
The stone was re-discovered at the very end of a 1986-2000 campaign of excavations conducted in the cloister of the cathedral.
Now exhibited in Riga, cloister of Dom (cathedral).
Height 83 cm, depth 86 cm, width 66 cm.
