Tumulus of the Athenians
Tumulus of the Athenians submitted by AlexHunger : Tumulus for the Athenians fallen at the battle of Marathon in 490 BCE against the Persians. 7000 Greeks defeated 20,000 Persians. There was a stele commemorating the dead, but this is now in a museum. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Round Barrow(s) in Attica.

A force of 7,000 Athenians and Plataeans defeated 20,000 Persians. The Greeks lost 192 men and the Persians 7,000. The Persians then fled in disarray on their ships and their invasion of Greece was broken. The cremated remains of the Athenians were buried under this mound and a stele was erected in their memory but appears to have been taken to a museum, probably the one in Athens.

The Greeks then sent Pheidippides on a 42 Km run to Athens to announce the victory, but the hapless hero died of exhaustion soon after fulfilling his mission.

Pausanias wrote: "On the plain is the grave of the Athenians, and upon it are slabs giving the names of the killed according to their tribes"

The site should be seen in conjunction with Trophy of the Athenians and Tumulus of the Plataeans nearby.

Like many of the minor archaeological sites in Greece, funding cuts may shorten the hours to see this and other sites around Marathon. Try to do your sight seeing early in the day. Most hours are curtailed by closing early.
