patmac visited on 23rd Feb 2018 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 4 Site about six metres north east of and below fire watchtower. Access had been recently cleared of vegetation but no directiona markings. Sign warning against entering as well a a short description of site, both in Greek. Geology is limestone and flora is typical maquis and pine forest. Site is on the edge of the ancient (and modern) Lavrio mines. Some modern horizontal shafts in area. Small gated entrance with padlock cut and pretending to be locked. Potentially dangerous inside, rock falls etc. though sturdy wooden props wedged to rocks in place. Claustrophobic. Pitch black. Torch required. Aged wooden steps and scaffold boards spanning archaeological pits. Archaeological surveying metal grids lying around the floor. Few speleothems existing, only went into main chamber though. Soot residue present. Numerous ancient small animal bones (food waste). Probable Neolithic pottery sherds present in bottom of pits. Water present as small drips, post recent rain. Not a pleasant place to live for me! But a stunning veiw from the entrance with good aspect.

Cave or Rock Shelter in Attica/Central Greece

The cave is named after a notorious Brigand of the 19th Century who hid there, but is one of the first sites inhabited from the palaeolithic onwards. Many artefacts have been found here.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Site believed to be near this position.
