The fortress of Fili, built high up on Mount Parnes, commanded the mountain routes and protected Athens against raids from the north. The integral construction and the foundation is anchored solidly to the rocky hilltop. The solid construction of the walls, built of coursed,square-dressed stone, substantiates the aesthetic uniformity and balance of the fortification architecture.
