The temples are called small and large Andesite temple. The one on the South West corner is the oldest. Please refer to map filed under the Citadel.
It is believed Sarmizegetusa was the spiritual center of the Dacians between about 100 BCE at the earliest and 106 BCE at the latest, when the Romans conquered Dacia, what is now Romania.
To build the temples, the Dacians flattened terraces, built retaining walls, channeled a spring and brought stones from up to 40 Km away. Of the temples, only the column bases remain as the Romans completely razed the area. One Statue base also survived.
The Romans usually tolerated the cults of local deities believing they were all the same as their gods. That these temples were destroyed suggests some human sacrifice might have been carried out.
Much smaller temples where found at the nearby Costesti-Cetatuie Dacian citadel and only one column base at Luncani Pietra Rosie.
