Nemea
Nemea submitted by Antonios : Temple of Zeus. Nemea (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Settlement in Peloponnese Peninsula

The Sanctuary of Zeus at Nemea developed at the beginning of the 6th century BCE, in an area inhabited since prehistoric times. The first temple of Zeus and the first 2 phases of the Heroon were constructed during the Archaic period while 9 Oikoi-Treasuries were built in the 5th century BCE. At the end of the 4th century BCE a new temple of Zeus, baths, a hostel, a stadium and the 3rd phase of the Heroon were built as part of a large construction project. After 270 BCE, the sanctuary fell into decline. The first, excavations were done in 1766 by the Dilettanti and were continued between 1884 and 1912 by the French School of Archaeology in Athens. In 1984, restoration work began on the temple of Zeus, which measured 43 metres by 20 metres and had 12 by Doric columns. In 1964 part of the Oikoi-Treasuries, of the hostel and a kiln were found.

The main excavations were carried out by the University of California at Berkeley, under the aegis of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens from 1974 to 1986. Restoration work like the re-erection of collapsed columns of the temple of Zeus are continuing until today. - A wealth of information, edited by the excavator Stephen G. Miller, is online:
