Natural Stone in Lithuania
Third largest boulder in Lithuania, very well known and photographed, and very easily accessible by car.
That said, it really stands out of the major routes and requires some time to be reached. As an added "thrill", it stands in a "corner" of Europe : very close to the point where Lithuania, Poland and Russia (Kaliningrad Oblast, Калинингра́дская о́бласть) merge, south of Lake Vištytis (Vištyčio ežeras, Виштынецкое озеро).
Vištyčio akmuo itself stands at 100 m of the border with Kaliningrad Oblast.
The village of Vištytis is a bit sleepy, which is part of its charm, and the shores of the lake are very inviting. Be aware that the border is not far away from the shore and, for the time being, crossing it by boat, even inadvertently, may not the best idea if your planning is tight (I didn't check out that one).
In the 18th century, it was used as an altar and called Holy Trinity Stone, and much respected throughout the 19th c. Later, when the region was governed by the German Empire, an attempt to split it into smaller stones failed. The marks left on the surface are supposed to account about that.
Up to recently, a ladder allowed to reach its top. The ladder has gone and, I swear it, it is no longer possible to climb on Vištyčio akmuo.
Please note (photo 138108) the rock-cut basin, a rather common feature found on several large and medium-size boulders.
Listed as natural and archaeological monument since 1964.
