Iron Age Hillfort in Finland

With an area of 3 hectares (7.4 acres), Borgboda Hillfort is the largest of one of six iron age hillforts in the municipality of Ǻland. Sited on a steep hill, the fort was built when water level was 5 metres higher than it is today, so it will have surrounded by water on three sides making it easy to defend. The steep hillside and cliff form a natural boundary to the north and east, whilst the south and western sides had walls formed of stone and timber, the remains of which can be seen today.

Close by the hillfort is a large iron age burial mound and, to the north, bronze age cairns.

Borgboda hillfort is one of Ǻland’s most important Iron Age sites and is located 2.7km east of Saltvik at Borge Hill. There is a parking area with a 700 metre path from the car park to the hillfort.
