Le Mourral Millegrand
Le Mourral Millegrand submitted by richardfrance : This type of architecture with a wood frame and load-bearing walls is unique in Southern France in the Neolithic era. The absence of any discernable habitations inside the enclosure, or food storage, suggested to Vaquer the hypothesis that these were ceremonial buildings or the residences of a privileged elite - so far unheard of amongst Bell-Beaker People. The archaeologist who searched it, Jean Vaquer, called it simply 'a fortified languedocian late neolithic site', but it is highly unusual in its construction. It featured two concentric earth-banks 66 m. in diameter and a wide ditch plus wooden palisade.

Inside, the remains of three buildings have been identified from preserved post-holes . The largest, to the north, must have measured nearly 30 m long and 9 m. wide.

The site is located on a hill of 112 metres/350 ft overlooking the Aude river valley, just south of the D610 a few kilometers to the east of Trebes.

Le Mourral Millegrand
Le Mourral Millegrand submitted by richardfrance : This site, in the middle of a commercial quarry, was studied as part of a rescue/preventive programme. The excavations took place between 1994 and 1999, for two months every summer, with the assistance of a hundred volunteers, and five doctoral students. Nothing is left : the hilltop has been scalped of its gravel, and its Neolithic history. Only the view of Alaric Mountain remains. For more... (Vote or comment on this photo)
