Gotland is either reached by sea or by air. It is the biggest island in the Baltic Sea and completely different in its geological structure from all the surrounding islands and mainland.
Millions of years ago it was a submerged coral reef around the equator, until it gradually moved with the continents and rose from the sea to its present location. During this rise it became more exposed to the elements, which eroded the limestone to form these gigantic columns.
In the local Gotland accent, and also in Swedish, they are known as raukar. On the way to Langhammars, on Fårö ('Sheep Island'), you should also pass wonderful raukar at Digerhuvud.
