Tapapakanga Park
Tapapakanga Park submitted by Klingon : Ruins of ancient Beehive houses (pre-Maori). (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Maori settlement in New Zealand

For many centuries Tāpapakanga was an important dwelling place for Marutūahu iwi, especially Ngāti Pāoa and Ngāti Whanaunga (Maori tribes and sub tribes). In those days Tāpapakanga supported several large kāinga (villages) each with extensive kūmara and taro cultivation. Archaeological sites on the park, mainly concentrated around the Tāpapakanga Stream and along the coastal strip, include three Māori pā (forts), storage pits (rua), terraces(tūāpapa), shell middens (ahu ota ota) and ovens (umu) as well as stone heaps indicating extensive riverside gardens. The Regional Park website has a more detailed description of the Park, its access and its history, from which the above extract is taken.
