Te Punga a Matori
Te Punga a Matori submitted by DrewParsons : Te Punga a Matori - the anchor stone from the ancestral Tokomaru Canoe. The Tokomaru was one of a number of ocean going canoes which carried Maoris to New Zealand around 800 years ago. Te Punga a Matori is the anchor stone from the Tokomaru Canoe which brought Maori settlers to New Zealand some 800 years ago. It is located in the Puke Ariki Museum in central New Plymouth.

For centuries it was kept on a ridge near the Mohakatino River north of New Plymouth. In 1927 Maori elders decided to lodge it in New Plymouth's museum for safe keeping. It is now housed in the new Puke Ariki Museum in central New Plymouth below Mt Taranaki (also known as Mt Egmont).
