Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature in Troms

The natural stone erratic is mentioned and interpreted as a sacrificial stone or Akko (rock-shaped lady) in the literature (Qvigstad 1926:351, Manker 1956:120, Marthinsen 1992:54). The stone is not mapped or photo-documented in these publications. Locally, the stone has been called Andasteinen.

The sacrificial stone is an natural stone portrution which is cracked It is about 2.5 meters long, 3 meters high and about 2 meters wide. The sacrificial stone is shaped like a sitting woman. The highest part of the stone is shaped like a woman's face with clean features. (I must confess I had a hard time seeing any clear female features in the stone or human like shape at all when I visited the site). The face is seen in silhouette from north to south. The face faces Basečohkka (Heart Point), which is a sacred Sami mountain. Basečohkka is the highest mountain in Salangen and Sørreisa, and is located exactly where the municipal borders of Salangen, Sørreisa and Bardu meet today.

South of and close to the sacrificial stone is a probable road. The road runs along the rock's eastern side. The road is heading downwards towards the Dagen bridge, which is part of Fv.152. The observed length of the road is approximately 9 metres, and the width is a maximum of 2.3 metres. The road appears to be slightly hollow, with a maximum depth of 30 cm. The stone is close to the road but it is very steep up to the stone from the road. From the stone there is a very nice view over the ocean to the north.
