Cairn in Uppland
The cairn is the centerpiece of an iron age graveyard, early to preViking to end of Viking era (no sign of Christian trappings). Given the proximity to Lake Mälaren, it would have been an emerged island or peninsula when first used, as the land continued its geostatic rebound since glaciation. There are dozens of graves at this site on the Island of Färingsö, and the graveyard is quite close to the main Viking city of Björkö, as the crow flies. Today, the island of Munsö has emerged to block passage. There are two score reasonably large graveyards from this era on Färingsö, but this one seems to been devoted to a wealthy farm/community. Elsewhere, typically, grave mounds are smaller and the stone-covered flatter graves are circular, 3 to 5 m. Here there are many of the rarer square or rectangular plots, with large stone edges and a thicker bed. Here, the flat graves are large (7-10 m) and in orderly rows. There are also some tight up against the cairn.
As cairns here on the island were more common in the bronze age but on hilltops, this cairn had old lichen growth indicating age, but it is down by the old lake shore, raising questions of whether it long preceded the other graves, or is a rare iron age example. There are also a few larger than normal mounds.
What makes the site impressive is not any one grave, but the number of unusual, large and well-ordered graves.
Near this graveyard is good lakebed soil, and the gentle slope uphill leads to a low hilltop, where now sits a manor house and outbuildings.
The graveyard is in a glade that has cattle grazing it, which keeps it open, compared to the thick tangle of woods just adjacent to it.
