This is a hillfort from the Iron age. It is located on a hill overlooking the centre of the town Harstad. These hillforts are called "villageforts" in Norway, and it quite numberous in Scandinavia. They seemed to have been located nearby ancient settlements, and is belived to have been places to seek refuge for the settlements if necessary.

Most of them are dated back to the time 200 to 400 BC, called the "wandering" period. This period is belived to be a time of constant struggling between groups of people, and almost all hillforts are from this period.

At the hillfort in Harstad, the north and north-western wall has been preserved, along with parts of the south wall. The "walls" are low, but it belived to have housed wooden palisades as well.

From this fort, it is a wide wiew of the bay in Harstad, as well as over the sea and Islands around, which is also very common with hillforts.
