The oldest pilgrimage site in Italy is Monte Sant´Angelo. The main sanctuary is a cave in which, according to legend, the archangel Michael appeared to some herdsmen in the 5th century shortly after the fall of the Roman empire. Today the site is still an important Christian pilgrimage site and many tourists visit the caves.
After the building of a church inside the cave the cult of the archangel Michael was exported to France, and a second Saint Michael sanctuary was built at the famous island Mont Saint Michel in Normandy, France.
