Rock Art in Nordland
Several rock art panels have been found in Lødingen kommune just the last years from 2020! They have all been found by local history enthusiasts and they are all of the grinded North Norway hunter-gatherer type of rock art believed to be from older stone age. This rock art panel was discovered as late as 28.08.22 by a local historian.
This panel was not easy to get to and it was my most challenging of all my trips this summer! To get to the site I had to park at a nearby road and walk for several hours up a mountainside with very difficult terrain. There are no footpaths and the mountainside is full of rock outcrops and ridges that either had to be climbed over or walked around with ravines or marshes or small ponds between them. The terrain doesnt look too challenging on the map however it took me hours to get up here. The site appears much closer to the main road than it actually is!
The rock art panel is located on a south east sloping rock outcrop with a flat and almost polished surface. There are several figures here of the typical hunter-gatherer grinded rock art style known from several sites in North Norway.
The main panel has three figures:
1. Clear figure of a whale/porpoise with dorsal fin. 130 cm long and 46 cm wide at the dorsal fin. The lines are 1-2 cm wide. The entire circumference of the animal is clear.
2. A possible elk or moose with a clear belly line (40 cm) and dorsal line (50 cm long), as well as possible front legs. The neck (extension of the abdominal line approx. 17 cm) is also visible. The head is not visible but the rest of the figure is clear
3. Seal, solid line - head and spur. Head towards the North-East. The length of the body is 82 cm, largest width 22 cm. Marked bend at the spur which is in a area without any moss or growth. Below and slightly to the left of the saddle is a cyano-covered patch of rock face with some faint, possibly grinded lines; 50 cm long and approx. 20 cm between the lines.
South-west of figure 1 and "behind" a protruding part of the rock:
Figure 4, an oblong figure with parallel lines and bow-shaped end to the north east. Interpreted to be a boat. Measures are missing.
In the landscape and area around this site is several remains of possible other carvings. If I had more time (but someday I will) I would explore the area in more detail and possible find new carvings!
