Abashiri prison
Abashiri prison submitted by Aska : Site in Hokkaidō Japan The stone garden with cascade (Vote or comment on this photo)
Abashiri prison is the most notorious jail in Japan, like Alcatraz in the US. Developed from an exile facility it opened in 1890 to accommodate the political offenders against the new Meiji government, prisoners were forced to reclaim the wilderness, construct roads and railroads on this northern frontier land in case the invasion of Russia.

Later the prison has accepted repeat offenders and Yakuza gangs, the villain movie series (1965-1972) of the same title and its title song are well-known to all Japanese people.

In 1983, the renovation of the buildings was accomplished and the old wooden buildings were moved and preserved as a historic museum on a nearby hill. In the vast ground, there are a dry landscape garden and stone-circle-like stone settings which do not seem to be suitable for cruel prison. In the restaurant of the prison, you can taste the prisoners’ frugal lunch.

Admission 1100 Japanese Yen (lunch 900 Japanese Yen 11:00-14:30), open all year long, 9:00-17:00. Official site in English
