Ancient Village or Settlement in Honshū. Taga-jō was built in 724 CE by Yamato (present day Nara) government as the northern branch office of the governmant, equivalent to the southern office Dazaifu (大宰府) in Kyūshū, and as the offensive fortress on the northern frontier against the native Emishi tribe. It suffered Jōgan earthquake and subsequent tsunami in 869, then was reconstructed and barely and continued until 11th C.
Now all of the buildings have been collapsed away except the chronological stele (38.30346N,140.98853E) which was built in 762, one of the oldest ones in Japan. In 2024 the main gate will be reconstructed to celebrate the 1300th anniversary.
