Barrow Cemetery in Bohemia

Large polycultural barrow cemetery in the forest east of Řepeč village - South Bohemia. Site is known since 19th century and first excavation took place in 1873.

Cemetery is first dated to the Middle Bronze Age and was used then through the Hallstatt till early La Tène period period. During that times some burials were placed in older barrows that were already standing.

Latest archeological survey from 2010 confirmed almost 70 mounds. Though only about 42 is preserved today and can be recognized in forest terrain. Most of the mounds are medium size of diameter 4-12 m and height of 0.5 to 1.5 m. But there are four large mounds of diameter around 20 m and height up to to 2.5 m which are still pretty impressive.

The mounds consisted of soil and stone structures surrounded by the rings of boulders. Archeological findings now deposited in the The Hussite Museum in Tábor town include mostly weapons, jewelry and tools. But also some unique finds of double-armed bronze hammer and an early La Tène Iron sword with a scabbard and a double spiral made of gold wire.

I visited the site in late May when the vegetation has already started to grow. Depite of that fact, good nomber of mounds was still well visible though covered in greens. The barrow cemetery Řepeč is protected national cultural monument.
