Some places simply have a spirit. Many stones of interesting shapes definitely served as objects of worship in the far past. But just a few were somehow adopted by the newer culture and religion. One is the Holy stone near Dolní Dvořiště, Bohemia, which is absolutely exceptional.

According to the Christian legend from the beginning of the 16th century, the Virgin Mary appeared here together with Angels to local shepherds. After that, the stone where she had appeared, split into two parts. Shortly after this event the place became an important place of pilgrimage. In 17th century the Church of the Virgin Mary of the Snow was built here.

The Holy stone itself is located in the in the small chaple in the back side of the church. Quite massive granit boulder is almost filling the whole place of the chaple. The stone has many circular depressions, sometimes called sacrificial or prophetic bowls.

To be honest, I'm very excited about such types of Christianized stone monuments. Other nice examples in this country are St. Vojtech's stone Nebílovský Borek or the St. Ludmila Stone. But the Holy stone is my favourite.

Note: Now this is what you call a Holy Stone - it's had a church built round it!
