Barrow Cemetery in Czech Republic
High concentration of barrows in woods west of Údraž (area of Písecké mountains) is exceptional even in region of South Bohemia. Several hundred barrows confirm exceptionally intensive settlement of this area in various Prehistoric periods and the early Middle Ages. Barrow cemeteries can be identified there in several locations among which archaeological site "U Honzíčka" in the Náveský forest is the most extensive.
30 burial mounds are arranged in irregular row of roughly EW orientation. The cemetery was used in the Bronze Age and the Hallstatt Period. The site was investigated for the first time as early as in 19th century. Archaeological findings include fragments of pottery, bronze buckle and bracelet, arrowheads, nails and more. All displayed and deposited at Prácheň museum of Písek town.
Mounds have diameter from 5 to 15 m and a height up to to 2 m. The largest barrow is 2.5 m high and and is located in the NW part. It has completely excavated inside core. The site is the National protected monument and is not signposted in any way.
