Ichinomiya Jinja shrine (in KitaKyūshū city)
Ichinomiya Jinja shrine (in KitaKyūshū city) submitted by Aska : Site in Kyūshū Japan (Vote or comment on this photo)
“Ichi-no-miya” means ‘the 1st grade (= principal) shrine [in the province]’, so numerous Ichinomiya shrines exist throughout Japan (there also exist 2nd grade (Ninomiya), 3rd garde (Sannomiya) shirines and place names are often adopted from them e.g. Sannomiya downtown in Kōbe). The Japanese myth says that the 1st (imaginary) emperor Jimmu stayed around here for a while but actually this shrine is the result of merger of 3 independent shrines and renamed in 1950.

At the end of a side path at the entrance of the shrine, there are a round and a square flat cairns surrounded by a fence. Some people believe them as the remains of proto Shinto religion, but they were ‘discovered and reported’ after the merge and the rename of the shrine, and does not look aged.
