Burial Chamber (Dolmen) in Sicily (Sicilia)
In Butera, in the province of Caltanissetta (Sicily), exists a dolmen cyst made up of stone slabs assembled in cubiform manner, present also in Sardinia and dated back to the bronze age, around 2900-2100 BC. It is in the new area of "Piano della fiera" where a prehistoric necropolis still stands. Used again in the Greek period, the monument takes us back to mixed cult practices, both Hellenic and indigenous, and characterised by the positioning of human remains inside urns (enchytrismόs) which, in turn, were placed inside these small chambers.
To get to Mura Pregne it takes the highway 113 Palermo-Messina, turning to a little road indicating the location "Cortevecchia", on the slopes of Mount Castellaccio. The dolmen, which falls in an area of great archaeological interest, has been ignored for years because of lack of consideration that the Sicilian scholars have shown against a prehistoric phenomenon that seemed outsider to the cultural experience of the Sicily.
This dolmen has a rectangular, corridor-type, consisting of four large blocks (two on each side) perfectly hewn and planted in the ground, on which is placed a cover slab. A second slab lies beside it, inclined, and a third, could have completed the roof and is lying at the entrance. The building reached to three meters in length.
7 km from Sciacca, next to highway 115, is the dolmen “La Lumia”, located east of the fund “femmina morta”. It was discovered in 1930 among a group of blocks of calcareous tufa and is considered a grave. All around were found fragments of pottery dating from the Ancient Bronze Age. Near the structure there are other boulders with carvings that suggest a small shrine or a sump pit.
