The Nordland Museum was founded in 1888 as the Nordland Museum of Fisheries. The current building dates from 1903, and having avoided destruction in the 1940 bombing of Bodø, this is one of the oldest remaining buildings in the town.
In addition to the displays of Sami life & culture and the exhibits of the town before, during and after war-time occupation, there is a small display of silver 'treasure' from the Viking Age.
The treasure was all found within a few kilometres from the museum, and contains silver, jewellery, silver pieces (for use as payment) and coins.
The total 'collection' weighs 1.2kg, and has been dated back to the second half of the 10th century.
The museum also has objects which have been found in Viking graves in Salten.
