Hallstatt Salt Mines
Hallstatt Salt Mines submitted by Harald_Platta : Reconstructed part of the "Chamber of Hearts" of the Hallstatt Salt Mine, which can be seen in the Vienna Natural History Museum. The salt mines in Hallstatt (Austria) are the oldest known salt mines in the world. Upper-day finds from Salzberg mountain and out of the valley, such as stone axes and deer antler pimples, suggest that salt was produced in Hallstatt for more than 7000 years.

Parts of the below ground area date back to 1500 BC, which makes it the oldest salt mine in the world. Among the most famous finds are the oldest preserved wooden staircase on the European continent, which dates from 1344/1343 BC. The "Man in Salt" is the body of a Celtic miner, who has died in a disaster in the mine. The salt has mummified the body. Similarly, many finds made of leather and cloth have been preserved as well.

Several finds and partial reconstructions can be seen in the Museum Hallstatt in Hallstatt as well as in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien in Vienna.

The mines in Hallstatt can be visited with guided tours (Salzwelten).
