Angono Petroglyphs
Angono Petroglyphs submitted by Torwen : Site on Luzon, Philippines. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Rock Art in Rizal, Luzon Island, Philippines.

The Angono rock shelter near Angono, Rizal, Luzon, Philippines was discovered in 1965 by artist Carlos 'Botong' Francisco on a field trip with boy scouts. The significance of this petroglyph site was immediately recognized and recording of the petroglyphs as well as excavation of the rock shelter started in the same year. In 1998 a small museum was build to emphasize the cultural value of the site. Since 1993 it was submitted to the tentative list of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention.

The petroglyphs are engraved on the back wall of the rock shelter which is ca. 63 metres long and up to 5 metres high. The engravings are arranged in a horizontal plane measuring ca. 25 x 3 metres. There are 127 figures engraved into the volcanic tuff.

Excavations of the rock shelter produced mainly remains from the Neolithic and Palaeolithic. Palaeolithic tools, but also pottery fragments, tortoise shells, and a Neolithic polished adze were part of the finds in the rock shelter. Since the majority of finds can be allocated to the Neolithic it is assumed that the petroglyphs also date to the Neolithic (between 2000 and 3000 BC).

The figures consist mostly of human figures, tortoises or lizards, but also triangles and circles are visible. In some parts of the rock shelter more recent writings can be found.
