The rescue and excavation of the Peinan Site led to the construction of the National Museum of Prehistory (NMP)

In July 1980, while the construction of today's South Line Railway Station (formerly called the Peinan East Line Railway Station) and switchyard was in progress, the building work revealed prehistoric remains of great interest on the Peinan Site. Many slate coffins and exquisite artifacts buried with the dead inside the coffins were excavated one after another, attracting great interest from the public as well as unfortunately, some illegitimate excavation and looting due to extensive coverage from the media.

After the Taitung County Government submitted a proposal to the relevant authorities, construction of the railway station was halted. Furthermore, Professor Wen-hsun Sung of National Taiwan University was delegated to recruit students and form the Peinan Culture Archaeology Team to carry out excavations and preservation.

Since then, for over 10 years Professors Wen-hsun Sung and Chao-mei Lien have led the National Taiwan University Archaeology Team at the site during the summer/winter vacation periods. The area of excavation is over 10,000m2, and over 1,500 burials and tens of thousands of pieces of pottery and stone artifacts have been excavated. This area is definitely the biggest site in the archaeological history of Taiwan. Both scholars in Taiwan and from overseas agree that it is the most important and representative site of the mid-late Neolithic Age in Taiwan. The area is also the largest slate coffin burial complex within the Pan-Pacific Ocean and South-East Asian region.

Professor Sung suggested that if we were to preserve the Peinan Site, an outdoor museum regarding the site should be built nearby. This was the first proposal for building a museum based on the Peinan Site. After 11 years of planning and construction, the NMP officially opened on August 17, 2002. It has established a foundation for the continuing development of the preservation and study of Taiwanese prehistoric culture.

This isn't going to be an actual useful comment. it is merely an observation.
I notice, for instance, the images may state something like "Iron Age Pottery," but there are no descriptions of that which the pottery is made nor are there descriptions of dimensions.
I find the lack of this vital information to be quite disappointing. For the most part, the objects are quite easily identifiable, but a lack of accurate information makes the images nothing better than a blank postcard.

Hello LordDragonstar and welcome, I see this is your first comment to our site so I'm guessing perhaps you're not familiar with our sources for our information and how our site works.

One one level, yes, it would be nice if every photograph submitted to us had a full description and provenance, however, we have submissions from all over the globe from people of many different cultures. Some are professional archaeologists and they will detail their submissions, some are dedicated amateurs who have the time to add accurate details to their images, some are dedicated amateurs who don't have the time, some are enthusiasts who don't feel confident to add a detailed description either in their own language or in English. Some are a one-time-only visitor who has photographed something either they think we may like or something that may be ancient and that they would like more information about. Sometimes descriptions of objects are a museum's own then whoever submits them here has to paraphrase the description, again that takes time and skill that some people either can't or don't want to commit to, but there's still value in us having and displaying the image, because someone else may come along and add the missing details.

When you are browsing our pages and you find you have some information that's relevant and new, please do send it, this is the way we work, some of our pages are submitted "whole" and others are a collaborative effort built up over time by people who don't know each other but have a shared common interest in prehistory.

    Hello lorddragonstar,
When I was in the museum, I tried to read something about the exhibited itmes, but there where no chance to understand. Almost everything was in chinese, there were no english translations except some infoboards which I posted as well. I took photos as much as I can and I wrote the information I had about the artifacts as much as I could red.
