Alstahaug Mound
Alstahaug Mound submitted by kenntha88 : The huge stone slab partially buried in the edge of the crater. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This site consist of a huge burial mound from the iron age. It is located on the south tip of a strip of land going out into the sea. The area around and the mound is covered in small leaf-tree forest.

The mound is slightly oval in shape, about 40 metres in lenth, about 30 metres side, and about 3-4 metres in height. In its original state, the mound have probably been 1-2 metres taller. On the top of the mound is a huge crater with smooth sides running almost to the bottom of the mound. The mound have obviously been plundered in later or earlier times. In the bottom of the crater is a large heap of stones and stones have been scattered around the edge of the crater.

The is covered in smaller trees and can be hard to photograph as a whole, but I was able to get some good photos of the edges and the crater in the middle. A huge stone slab is in the craters western edge. Possible it has been used as a lid for the burial chamber.

It can be hard to reach because of the long walk to the location and the difficult and thick forest. Going down to the sea and follow the shore-line to the south is the easiest way to get there.

Locally, the mound is called "The Kings mound" a name also given to several other large mounds, for example the burial mounds on Bertnem, Namdalen.
